THE PERHENTIAN ISLANDS TRAVEL GUIDE
Perhentian Islands form by two main island which is big island (Perhentian Besar) and small island (Perhentian kecil). Perhentian Island in Malay means " Place to stop Island"Perhentian Island are cluster of island off the coast of northeastern Malaysia in state of Terengganu and not far from Thailand border. The laid-back atmosphere and the natural beauty of the Perhentian islands immediately transport you to a different world. White sandy long beach, crytal clear water and untouched forest. There is no road on the island, you need to travel between two island by water taxi. Some pathway walk through the jungle will get you explore to the other site of the island. Perhentian Island usually open 9 months in a year. During monsoon season from mid of November to next year mid of February will closed due on the sea wave are too strong. Peak season start from June - Mid of September and the rest is low season. You are advice to book in advance if you wish to come during the peak season.
You are in Holidays, no rushing. Perhentian Islands is an excellent place to stay and relax. Chill out at the hammock, enjoy the sunshine and forget your care.
Perhentian Islands is surrounded by several snorkeling point. You can just rent the snorkeling gear from the gear rental shop or resort you stay. Start your own snorkeling nearby. If you wish to go further far, a half day or full day tour you can join. Trips cost from RM40 – RM60. The colors of the coral and the diversity of fish will keep you bobbing up and down in the water for hours. Make sure you go right in between the Besar and Kecil islands for a chance to find turtles and see how far you can swim with them.
2. Scuba Diving
If you enjoy exploring the underwater world, Scuba diving is superb experience in Perhentian Islands. Many diver visit here time and time again to explore the deep. Marine life is in abundance here and apart from the many species of hard and soft coral that form the backbone of these ecosystems you can also expect to encounter turtles, several species of sharks, mackerel, jacks, moray eels, nudibranchs and various other reef fish. Visibility in the sea is good but not after the monsoon season (March).
3. Sea Kayaking
Another attraction in Perhentian Islands. Diving shop or resort they do kayak rental. You can make your own way between two island. The water is forever calm – it looks like a mirror – so you won’t have to worry about navigating waves. And if your arms get a bit tired then stop, look around, catch your breath amidst all the beauty and jump in for a quick dip to cool off.
4. Jungle Trekking
Tropical forest covers the greater part of the Perhentian Islands and a few
trails that twist through the greenery allow you to explore the diversity of
plant life. In big island there is a 30min jungle trail from Perhentian Island
Resort to Arwana Resort. Certain part of the trails is slipry, do wear hiking

If you like party, small island is the best option. A lot of jungle bar & hut at the beach. Fire dance perfomance and music.
There are many resort & guest house running in Perhentian islands but compare with other island in Malaysia. Perhentian Islands is not heavy develop. Eletricity is limited and some of the guest house only provide eletric from 7PM – 7AM.Here is the tips for you to choose your “right” accommodation.
Small island offer a lot of budget guest house with basic facility. If you like night life and party, long beach on small island the the best choise for you. Many accommodation in small island are located at long beach and aur beach. To see sunrise you must choose D’Lagoon Chalet on north of small island or nearby. You have a better view of it.
Big island is good option for family and many luxury resort located here. If you don’t like crowd and wish to stay quite, big island is the best option. Most of the accommodation is locate at Teluk dalam, tanjung genting and teluk pauh.

Kuala Besut Jetty is the main gateway to Perhentian islands. Taking a speedboat in an hours will reach. Speeboat usually depart at 7AM / 10AM / 12PM / 4PM but if you are enough 8 person and you can depart any time.
Kota Bahru City Center
Many travel agency organise chatter van to Kuala Besut Jetty. Journey is 1hours and cost around RM200 – RM250 per van. Taxi from the town to Kuala Besut will charge RM60 – RM100 per taxi depend your departure time. Usually after afternoon will be expensive. A local bus also running to Kuala besut, you can get from the Kota Bahru bus station.
Airport Kota Bahru
A private taxi will cost RM100 – RM120. You can check at the airport counter. Journey is 1.30hrs
Kuala Terengganu City Center
Local bus running few trips a day. You can check at the bus station. A private taxi will cost RM200 – RM250 per way.
There are only 1 boat per day to Perhentian island from Redang Pelangi Resort or Redang Bay Resort. This is not public transfer. If you are in a group of 12-15, they can special organise for you. The boat only stop at Big island and from there you can get water taxi to small island. It is not recommended if you go alone. Find more people to share the boat cost.
Kang Travel or Trans Holidays organize daily shuttle service to Perhentian island. Depart early morning at 6AM and arrive 2PM. Ticket cost RM130 – RM150 per person include the speedboat ticket as well
Taman Negara, Kuala Tahan
Han Travel organize daily shuttle service from Han Rainforest Resort at 8AM. The journey is around 8hours and make 2 stop for break, Jerantut / Gua Musang. Ticket cost RM95 per person to Kuala Besut Jetty and speedboat ticket cost RM70 per person for 2 way. You can buy this bus ticket from Han Rainforest Resort one day before.
